Many printers and scanners use driverless technologies such as AirPrint or IPP Everywhere, which don't require additional drivers on your Mac. But third-party drivers might still be available for older devices that do require a driver. Always before connecting the device to your Mac for the first time. If the appropriate driver is available from Apple, your Mac will install it automatically. This list is no longer updated.

But, for a printer whose only job is to print small photos, the convenience of a home photo lab comes with a rather high price. Features, design, and setup The PM-400 is small and lightweight (9.8 x 6.9 x 3.3 inches when folded up, and 4 pounds), making it highly portable. Drop down the front panel, which serves as the output tray, and lift up the top panel, which exposes the input tray, and it’s ready to go. On the top of the unit is a 2.7-inch color LCD (non-touch), four-direction control pad, and keys for Home, Back, Start, and Stop. Bill Roberson/Digital Trends Initial setup involves inserting a single ink cartridge that contains all four colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black), and installing the print driver (downloaded from Epson’s support site) if you are connecting the printer to a computer. Connectivity options include hardwire USB 2.0, or wireless Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct (which connects directly to a Wi-Fi-enabled device, without going through a network).

In our tests, a 1.5MB image file was printed from a memory card in just under a minute and a half, while a set of three similarly-sized files took four minutes and 29 seconds. A few seconds are taken up by paper loading between each print. The built-in display has enabled Espon to give the control panel a more comprehensive menu system, which provides step-by-step instructions that make printing a photo easy. Users can select from seven printing options: print all, print selected images, print a sequence of images, print a 20-shot index of photos stored in memory (camera or card), print photos selected by date, add a frame, and print a set of images selected with the DPOF function in a digital camera. When printing from a PC, the driver allows you to choose between borderless and bordered prints, auto correct print colours, or convert the print to sepia or B&W. You can also enhance print quality by checking the Digital Camera Correction or Enhance Fine Details box.

The so-called ‘appliance’ photo printer, designed like a domestic toaster, is one of the fastest growing markets for manufacturers and Epson joined the fray early on. Its latest PictureMate printer, the 500, goes some way further than the competition by offering six-colour printing, where others offer three or four. This convenient printer is around the size of a small ghetto blaster and comes with a handy carrying handle, though the rechargeable battery pack giving it full portability is an optional extra. If you can have a ‘traditional’ layout on a type of printer which has only been around for a couple of years, the PictureMate 500 follows it. At the top is a 2.4-inch colour LCD screen, which can be pulled up to any convenient angle, with a small control panel of buttons just in front. These are used to work through the on-screen menus and to select images for printing.

Prints came out with fine resolution, but they were still slightly on the cold side - a point picked up last year in the previous mini printer test. This was the first printer we printed from in the test, and so we found ourselves coming back to its prints as the benchmark. Epson produces excellent photo paper and the PictureMate 500 makes the most of it. While the HP 475 still had the kind of warm colour saturation we favour, the PictureMate beat it on fidelity and resolution. The software is simple and you can choose menu options set on layers above the image, which gives it an intuitive ease. Bizarrely, when we came back to do our second round of testing the images were washed-out and mostly green. This couldn't be due to the ink running low, because Epson's cartridges are massive and we had only printed off a dozen prints.

Even shots from good-quality smartphones came out looking nice. We attribute this to the four-color ink tank versus ones that use three colors. Epson claims a 200-year life for the print; unfortunately, it’s not something we can put to the test. The PM-400 is made to work with Epson paper, although there is an option called “plain paper” in some settings. There’s nothing to stop you from using paper from other brands, but the printer maker generally matches the ink and paper, so quality can’t be guaranteed if you’re using something different.

We considered changing the ink cartridges around, but unfortunately at this point the printer just died. All rather worrying. Up until then - Martian-esque second wave of images aside - it was a pretty competent machine, and its first round of prints were excellent. Sadly, though, we can only work with what is in front of us. The build quality is a bit rickety on this printer, especially on the door panel that opens to reveal the memory slot options. Perhaps build had something to do with it - whatever the case, we don't recommend writing off the whole line. It is most likely a solid printer and this was just one of those things.
