The Ovation logo had a red background (see left photo above). The serial numbers were either hand written or typed in black or red ink. These labels appeared on all the original series acoustics; Balladeer, Deluxe Balladeer, Josh White, Classical and 12-String during approximately the first 1.5 years of production. Interestingly, the 12-String carried the Balladeer label with the words '12-String' typed below it. Serial numbers were usually also stamped into the neck block of the guitar.

These were Ovations first multi-soundhole guitars and thus needed a label that could be seen inside the smaller holes. The original Adamas labels were printed on parchment paper and contained the model number and fundamental frequency. The first 600 Adamas guitars were hand signed by Charles Kaman. From serial number 601 to approximately 4000, Bill Kaman signed them. Adamas II labels were hand numbered, but not signed.

We know better, and a lot of these snobs who've never so much as tried an Ovation quickly change their minds when they hear and play a higher end model, but again this ain't a higher end guitar you've got.

The math I was taught still puts the lowest used price plus your figure for shipping at just about what I'd pay at my local GC for a brand new one. Please realize, there isn't anybody here who has a direct emotional or financial interest in what you can sell your guitar for. Can't vouch for the preamp, but it looks almost identical to my celebrity deluxe (circa 1995). One of the biggest tells is that the bridge is not fancily carved - I think all the usa ones at the time had fancy carved bridges and carved leaves. Only some of the Adamas models, the Custom Legend and Custom Elite models, and some of the commemorative models have had that.
'Cracking the Code' charts You should be looking at a series of number ranges. These are the serial numbers. If you look up at the widget in the top right of the page, you should notice that there are separate charts for three-, four- and six-digit serial numbers. Make sure you are looking at the chart with the correct number of serial number digits or you could improperly date your instrument. There are also separate charts for Adamas and Collector's series guitars. Find where your serial number fits into the range in the left column, then match it up with the year in the right column. You've now found the year your guitar was made.
Then look at eBay, using the recently completed auctions search function to see what used ones sell for. 220 is optimistic. In the 1980s, Ovation introduced shallow-bowl guitars to appeal to electric guitarists. In 1977-1978, Gypsy, an Ovation performing and recording artist, designed the first stereo pre-amplifier for the Adamas 12 string and used it on his album 'Ladies Love Outlaws.' At the same time, Ovation provided small doors that blocked the sound holes from the inside in order to dampen feedback in the presence of loud stage monitors. Gypsy had also requested the addition of a round hatch in the back of the body of pre-Adamas guitars to facilitate changing the on-board battery, a feature that was then adopted for all the 'round holes.' Before this time, the strings on the round-hole guitars had to be removed to do this.

It probably is some form of Celebrity Deluxe, but the model numbers have changed several times over the last 15 years, so figuring out the exact model will probably require the e-mail to Ovation that the OP has already sent.

The action is wonderful. Everybody who plays it loves it. It doesn't have the booming bass of a D-28, but it makes up for it in other ways. I don't care as much for the new ones made overseas, but the old Ovations were wonderful guitars.

I'm using kijiji (Canadian ) Online stores usually have things for 200 and such, (Cheap ) that's what an online store is. But if I were to go into my local music store (Long and Mcquade ) and wanted to pick myself up a used Ovation, it'll cost me 399 without the case. I have a case, and this baby is in mint condition.
