Syntorial is a synthesizer-teaching software created by Audible Genius, a company owned by website programmer, musician and teacher. Syntorial is a subtractive synthesizer tutorial that only covers a bit of fm synthesis. You aren't going to really get a 'skrillex growl' from a subtractive synthesizer unless you post process it correctly. Syntorial is a new video-game like software that teach you how to program synthesizers by ear. It features interactive learning method with real VST plugins, over almost 200 lessons, MIDI controllable, and comprehensive lesson packs video series using NI Massive, Sylenth1, Z3TA+ 2, and Minimoog Voyager to help you jump start the learning.

This synth and the first 22 lessons are all part of the free Syntorial app available now in the App Store. Upgrade at any time directly within the app or at Syntorial.com to get all 199 lessons and additional Lesson Packs on the iPad, as well as the desktop version of Syntorial for Mac and PC, and Syntorial's synth as a VST and AU plugin.
After making the, Hanley held crowd-funding for Syntorial on from August 23 to September 22, 2012. The campaign garnered $8,614, succeeding its $5,500 goal. The money was used for hiring graphic and web designers, for buying and other development-related programs and paying for some startup business-related expenses. Hanley said on the main page for the campaign that he was planning to finish the program by March 2013.

While amusing the first few times, most users will probably elect to turn the optional audio feedback off. The focused sound matching challenges involve a screen with two buttons: Hidden Patch and My Patch. The Hidden patch button hides all the controls and just lets the user hear the sound. The My Patch shows all the (relevant) controls for the user to tweak. One important feature exists, but it took me quite a while to realize it was there. When initiating a new challenge, or when pressing the Play button, a programmed note sequence plays.

I'm so grateful for this app (and to the developers who've made it!) - as a guitarist I've gotten really into the amazing world of iOS music making and there are a lot of synths! If you want to actually understand how to use the controls within synths and to make your own sounds (and just understand the sounds you're hearing better) then this is so worth the investment. I'm really enjoying the well made tutorials and challenges, Everything is very user friendly, well thought out and well laid out.

The challenges play a simple note sequence on a “hidden” patch—a synth program whose settings are not shown. You can then make adjustments to whatever parameters are available, and can go back and forth between your patch and the hidden patch while the sequence continues playing.

A beta was released on June 15, 2013, and the first official version of Syntorial came out on August 27. The day after Syntorial's first official release, Hanley announced that he was in the works of the and versions of Primer. A beta of the VST and AU was released on October 14, 2013, and the official first versions was distributed on November 5, 2013. Version 1.2 of Syntorial was released on September 25, 2013, added 50 presets to the synth and the ability to save user files, significantly tweaked the scoring system and lowered the audio response level, among minor bug fixes.
It will come down to how fast you cruise through the various lessons. The more experienced student will breeze through some of them, such as envelope design. But make no mistake, unless you are already an extremely accomplished sound designer, you will be challenged and you will learn much as a result. Syntorial is the brainchild of Joe Hanley, who established Audible Genius to pursue commercializing it.
