My USB Dongle / License Key is failing after several hours or days of successful operation and I get Software Protection Failure on my SCADA workstations. I also noticed that the Citect Key Update utility can no longer detect the key when it fails and the light on the USB dongle is not illuminated.

The only instance that may is open will be displayed as running as host 0 instance. If an attempt is made to open another instance of the project, it will not run. All of the Citect32.exe processes will shutdown shortly after starting. Another symptom will be that you can see some meter values but not able to see circuit breaker status's or one line status's. Only diffrence is that the new client PC is not in the same network. We have two separate networks on our plant, one for normal office, and one for factory automation. The second control PC is in office network, but we have created an route via router to the factory network. I can ping, share folders and setup an remote desktop connection to the scada PC, so the connection is OK.
In my case, I have lost the connection to the key when using it in conjunction with a bi-directional printer. Since there was no error message, I could only conjecture as to the real problem. I suspect that bi-directional print drivers can hold the port busy for too long of a period causing the dongle code to return a failure to Citect. I agree that upgrading the NT service packs could help.

Should you need to see the Runtime Environment you can select the 'PLscada Runtime Service' Icon on the desktop and select to be take to the Session ID 0 if the project is already running. If the Project is not running it will not take you to the Runtime Project so you will need to manually start the 'Citect Auto Start Service'. If you only need to access the project you can always use the web client instead of opening another instance of the Runtime Project.

Issue: When logging into a PL SCADA session using a remote desktop connection (mstsc admin) the Runtime manager will not start and the graphics page crashes with the following error message: Software Protection Failure No key found or no license available from network Cause: This issue may be caused by PL SCADA running as a service. Resolution: If PLSCADA is running as a service you will not able to open another instance of the Runtime Project. The only instance that may is open will be displayed as running as host 0 instance. I modified my project to avoid using FileFind. Alternatively, release the consumed file handle by calling FileFind() repeatedly, until it returns an empty string.
This can be accomplished by navigating to 'View>Select Columns' in Task Manager. If you notice any Citect32.exe running in session 0 this means that Runtime Project is running as a Service. You will also see an icon on the desktop labeled 'PLScada Runtime Service' as well as a Service named 'Citect Auto Start'.
Just not to other servers, which is fine for development. To BobB, helpful response. I also am SI, but someone else has the dongle, and I only have an old version dongle. But I always found that the dongle is pointless for development, and 10 minute demo mode is fine for testing development.
On our plant we have an server license, and 1 control license for client. Now i have updated the USB key, so in the key update tool is the following information: 1 full license 2 control clients Software version V7.20 + SP2 Now on second PC, i have installed runtime, and configured all settings. When i start runtime, the project opens up, and after 30 seconds, it close, and got the message: 'Software protection failure, No key found or no license available from network' The second PC is configured the same as the first PC, witch will work correctly. But the real cause was a leak in Citect. Watch the file handles counter in Task Manager - this should not increase much, during the week. In my project, calling FileFind( c:fred.txt ) consumed an extra handle, 1 every 10s when it was called. After 6h 30min, there were no more file handles available to the system. When the Sentinel driver couldnt get a file handle, the authentication of the dongle must have failed. Citect reported a Software Protection Failure, and shutdown.
