And a bullet protruding partway out the muzzle! My gun whisked away to become a photo queen. Winchester soon got a boatload of ammo back over that matter as my Agency was returning such from multiple field offices! I'm not sure what lot(s) became suspect. But 'a lot of lots' were returned.

I promptly sold it a gun show with the specific warning that the gun would need some work before being used for self-defense. One of the few guns I've had in my lifetime that have been pure lemons, through and through.
Mike did a heck of a job, he worked on the finish as well, removed some scratches and the old rough factory finish. The carry bevel he did is awesome, the gun is smooth.

Look at the take down pin(right side) and if it is flat with the frame, that is the first version. You need to use a pointed item to push the take down pin thru the frame right-to-left for dis-assy. If the pin sticks out and is rounded the is a later version one. There are other things that are different, maybe a few others will chime in to name them, this one is off the top of my head and always be my first thought.
Looked around here but didn't see any of these handguns so I figured I would share mine. I am the original owner of this AMT Automag-II. It is a WMR-22mag rimfire handgun. It had a jamming issue with some ammo when it came out and it likes to fire Winchester ammo.
That was variable reliabilty. Some functioned fairly well with ball ammo. The one I had was pretty unreliable. I didn't like the single action/ striker design in a pocket gun and take down for cleaning/lubing was a pain that involved driving out a roll pin. The magazine was flimsy and I didn't like the heel release magazine catch.
This gun is pretty loud and has a recoil like a.38 special. If you are expecting the typical 22LR noise and recoil you will be in for a big surprise. The muzzle flash is huge, about 12 inches in diameter and it is really fun to fire. Extraction and holding the case when firing was interesting how AMT overcame the issue. This excerpt is from wikipedia, 'There were a number of engineering challenges to overcome in designing an autoloading.22 WMR handgun.

My Backup, a good definition in the exact context of the name. Mine was compact, relatively lightweight, ergonomically satisfactory, and of greatest importance, functionally RELIABLE. The postulation that IF the DAO model you reference is of such decent quality as mine, a nice gun! Good luck and. I've owned mine for about 10 years and I've ran over 2500 rnds through it without any FTF or FTEs. So I'd have to say I got one of the good ones lol!I have several of the automag series.
These Hold Opens replace the peened in ball bearing with a pin, does not jump up under fire and is held in place with a roll pin. With all this said, Hi Standard seems to have omitted the port system and it is reported that the new design works well without it and with most ammo. The original guns were engineered around the Winchester Super X ammo and the guns would not function with Federal or CCI.
I so believe mine was an early product edition of the first corporate iteration. My Backup, a good definition in the exact context of the name. Mine was compact, relatively lightweight, ergonomically satisfactory, and of greatest importance, functionally RELIABLE.
Hi and welcome to Ian’s AMT Information site. From the outset I would like to thank my wife for her support over the years in the building of my collection, she is simply fantastic. The goal of this website is to be a complete set of reference materiel for AMT firearms, as you can imaging not all of the content on the site belongs to me and this has been a real community effort, feel free to pop over to and say Hi if you want to meet some of the others who have supported this process. Feel free to look around, I am still in the process of adding content so if you cant find something feel free to get in-touch as I may have it stashed away. All the best.
When i sent it in, I asked the repair person to 'get some range time with it and fire it as much as they wanted to before sending it back, because I wanted a working gun' When i got it back there was a test target and some empty brass in the box. It has worked fine since. With any handgun (and most long guns) reliability is just about everything. Without reliability, excepting strictly collector status pieces, they're worse than boat anchors; such with an element of essential reliance involved!
The design team, headed by Mark Lovendale, took the Auto Mag pistol from a fully functional machined chrome-moly steel prototype designed by Max Gera to a more complicated and less reliable welded up stainless steel pistol. Max Gera disagreed with Harry Sanford about how the company should proceed and left the company. Additionally the new design team was convinced the Auto Mag pistol was not ready for production and could not be produced at a profit.

I don't think pre-fix on the AMT line meant much, but maybe somebody can help with that.

Bushing looks good, barrel doesn't show any drag marks or wear marks. Back from the range.sorry for the delay in posting. Had a few stops with the Hardballer.always on the last shot and always with the factory magazine. This seems to indicate an issue with the mag more than the gun, the mag has the old style follower so I am thinking this is where the problem lies. Pistol gobbled up the 200gr JHP's with no issue.Infact you can chamber a spent round!
Harry's son Walter continued to sell the remaining parts through automagparts.com. Production guns were made in.44 AMP. Experimental pistols were made in.45 ACP,.30 AMP.357 AMP and.41 JMP. Except for the.45 ACP guns, changing calibers required only the additional barrel and cartridges.
Those who diss the AMT and IAI of any model most likely have never owned one nor even had the opportunity to shoot one. They were/are not cheap alternatives to any other 1911 nor are they cult guns. They are very well built.
• Furniture: Two-piece black polyurethane (AMP models) or holly or ebony wood (JMP model) grips. • Features: Ribbed barrel.
Federal clogged up the ports while CCI were too quick burning and in most cases blew off the case heads. Your gun may or may not have come with a disclaimer that states to use the Winchester ammo only. We stared throwing them in after they came in for repair. Hope this helps.

RANGE REPORT-AutoMag II I took the AMT AutoMag II to the range today with CCI MIni-Mag 22WMR ammo. And here is what I found: The magazine is tough to get all 10 rounds into and the gun really does not always like the magazine filled beyond 8 rounds. The last round hold open feature did not work all the time. Both of these issues will probably work their way out as the gun breaks in. Even though this gun was new in 1987 it only had a couple of boxes of ammo through it and it is very tight. The sight were not even adjusted correctly and took a huge change to get to the center of the bull.
I had one for a year or so, but no theres not much out there about them? I did a goggle search one time and found some pictures of the first owner, of him a Clint Eastwood and the one Automag he used in a movie. And yes there pretty good 1911 pistols for the money and all s/s. But some gunsmith will not tuch them if you want to ever change anything on them? Look up AMT inc.
Not the least of which are extraction problems. The extraction problems stem from the fact that the slow burning rifle powder of the.22 WMR cartridge develops a late peak pressure. This can cause the case mouth to expand and jam in the chamber when fired from a handgun. AMT overcame this issue by drilling 18 holes at 90 degrees to the chamber. A sleeve was then welded over the chamber; providing a tiny amount of clearance for the excess gas to escape from the first set of holes on back to the second set, thereby relieving the pressure enough to prevent the case from sticking.'
I have field stripped and cleaned it and used Tetra-Lube grease on the rails and frame. Only concern I have is that the barrel's lower lug looks a bit beat up but the frame looks ok. Upper Lugs on the barrel and slide are sharp and show no signs of wear and tear. Bushing looks good, barrel doesn't show any drag marks or wear marks.
